Department of Civil Engineering aims at creating opportunities for students to imbibe, essential traits of Civil Engineering profession through a variety of means like classroom instruction, practical sessions in the laboratory, industrial training ,field visits, educational tours, interaction with the working professionals, design workshops, analysis of design and execution aspects of live projects, awareness of recent developments in civil engineering ,case studies, exposure to engineering practice, seminars, mini projects, establish correlation between classroom teaching and field practice , emphasis on system design etc. It is expected that the students will in addition to being good civil engineers will also acquire appreciation for quality, lateral thinking abilities, tools to extrapolate knowledge, ability to generate a number of feasible solutions to a problem etc.
Curriculum, class room teaching, laboratories are being designed to fulfill these objectives. Civil engineering industry is associated in curriculum design to ensure that the students get adequate exposure to civil engineering practice. Efforts are being made to establish Consultancy so that students can have regular and sustained exposure to practical aspects of Civil engineering. Faculty members are recruited and trained to orient themselves towards training students to be consummate civil engineers.
The department is progressing towards its stated goal under the guidance of Prof V.N.Sukumar who has adequate exposure and passion to achieve these goals. Faculty members of the department though small in number at this stage have the conviction and determination to realize the goals devised for the department. Considerable effort and resources are being committed to ensure that the infrastructure is created well in advance. It is certain that the department will in a short time acquire infrastructure and intellectual assets to establish its credentials as a center for advanced learning which will have profound effect on the quality of students in terms of erudition and attitude.
